La Paz Living - Things to Know

As the capital of Baja California Sur, La Paz represents a simple, comfortable, authentic Mexican lifestyle, far from the touristy atmosphere of other Mexican resort towns. This vibrant community was built with a deep respect for the natural attributes of the desert landscape and the Sea of Cortez. The result is a laid-back lifestyle focused on interacting with people and surroundings. Mexican and American cultures melt together with the beautiful landscape enhanced by a low cost of living and a high quality of life. It’s no wonder CNNMoney.com and the New York Times recognize La Paz, Mexico to be among the top foreign destinations to retire.

Currency in Mexico

Almost all prices in La Paz are quoted in Mexican Pesos (MXP$) and it is considered easier and more appropriate to carry the local currency if you intend to spend money in the local stores. However, most shops will accept US$.

Language in Mexico

While there is no official language at the federal level in Mexico, about 97% of the population speaks Spanish. Mexico has the largest Spanish-speaking population in the world, with more than twice as many as the next largest. English is widely used in businesses at the border cities as well as by the one million U.S. citizens living in Mexico, mostly in small melting-pot towns such as La Paz. Any effort that you make to communicate in Spanish, however bad, will always be appreciated with a smile!

Transportation in La Paz

La Paz has its own International airport serviced by Aero Mexico and Alaska Airlines. Direct service is available from Los Angeles on Alaska & Aero Mexico with about 6 to 8 flights weekly. Also from Los Angeles, Aero Mexico has direct service with one flight from Phoenix, and also from Mexico City. Another option is to fly into San Jose del Cabo International airport, operating a large number of charter flights and approximately two and half hours by car to La Paz. A new airport shuttle service has recently begun operations to transport La Paz visitors to and from the San Jose del Cabo airport.

Entry Regulation for La Paz

Proof of citizenship is required. Passport is best; a driver's license is not sufficient. You will be required to fill in a "Tourist Visa" upon entering the country. Do not loose this visa as you are required to hand this in when you leave the country, otherwise you will be subject to a fine.

Buying Real Estate in Mexico

In order to purchase coastal land in Mexico there must be created a trust agreement between a Mexican bank and the seller of the property. As beneficiaries of the trust, foreigners are able to enjoy unrestricted use of land located in “restricted zones” without violating the law. The bank holds the title, but the buyer holds all power to use, enjoy, or sell the property to any eligible buyer.
